Lighted box signs are internally-illuminated rectangular sign cabinets, typically constructed with aluminum frames and translucent acrylic or polycarbonate faces displaying business names, logos, and branding. Used by small businesses, retail strip malls, gas stations, restaurants, auto repair shops, dry cleaners, and any commercial property where cost-effective illuminated signage is required.

American LED Signage manufactures lighted box signs in four core configurations — single-face wall mount, double-face projecting, pylon-top cabinet, and underlit canopy box — with LED retrofit upgrades from older fluorescent illumination, standard and custom sizing, and full installation in all 50 US states.

Four Configurations

Four Configurations.

Each configuration of lighted box signs fits a different use case, property type, and visibility need. Pick the configuration that matches your project.

01

Single-Face Wall Mount

Flat sign cabinet mounted flush to the building facade. Visible only from directly in front of the property. Most cost-effective box sign configuration. Used by strip mall tenants, office buildings, retail storefronts, and small businesses with frontal-only visibility.

  • Flush wall mount construction
  • Front-facing visibility only
  • Most cost-effective option
  • Strip mall / storefront standard
02

Double-Face Projecting

Cabinet projecting perpendicular from the building facade with sign faces on both sides. Visible from pedestrian traffic walking past the property in either direction. Used by storefronts on busy pedestrian streets, urban retail, and corner properties.

  • Two-sided projecting cabinet
  • Visible from both directions
  • Urban retail / pedestrian use
  • Corner property standard
03

Pylon-Top Cabinet

Sign cabinet mounted at the top of a pylon sign pole structure. Same cabinet construction, mounted at height for highway and major-road visibility. Standard for gas stations, fast-food chains, hotels, and any business needing tall-pole identification.

  • Mounted on pylon pole structure
  • Highway-visible scale
  • Standard pylon-top format
  • Gas station / restaurant use
04

Underlit Canopy Box

Sign cabinet integrated into the underside of a building canopy or porte-cochere. Visible from drive-through traffic and approach lanes. Used by gas stations, drive-thru restaurants, banks, and hotel porte-cocheres where overhead identification is required.

  • Canopy-integrated installation
  • Drive-thru / approach visibility
  • Specialty mounting configuration
  • Gas station / drive-thru use

Project Process

From Site Survey to Lit Storefront.

Every channel letter project follows the same five-stage pipeline. Typical timeline is 6 to 10 weeks from signed quote to installed sign — longer in jurisdictions with extended permit review (Los Angeles, San Francisco, NYC), shorter where permits are fast (most Texas, Florida, and Sun Belt markets).

01

Design & Rendering

Branded letter concepting with rendered mockups overlaid on photos of your actual storefront. Iterations until you sign off on dimensions, colors, and mounting position. 1 to 2 weeks.

02

Engineering & Permits

Engineer-sealed structural and electrical drawings. Permit submission to the city or county. Landlord approval. Variance requests where needed. 2 to 6 weeks depending on jurisdiction.

03

Fabrication

UL-48 listed fabrication in our manufacturing facility. Aluminum returns cut, painted, and assembled. Acrylic faces routed and finished. LED modules installed and wired. 2 to 3 weeks.

04

Installation

Certified install crews dispatched from the regional team nearest your location. Crane truck where required. Mounting, wiring, electrical hookup, and first-light commissioning. 1 day.

FAQ

Common Questions About Lighted Box Signs

The questions buyers, property managers, and search engines most frequently ask about channel letter signage.

What is a lighted box sign?
A lighted box sign is an internally-illuminated rectangular sign cabinet, typically constructed with an aluminum frame and translucent acrylic or polycarbonate faces displaying the business name, logo, and branding. Lighted box signs are the most cost-effective illuminated commercial signage format and are the standard choice for small businesses, retail strip malls, gas stations, and most independent storefronts.
What is the difference between a lighted box sign and channel letters?
Lighted box signs are single-cabinet structures with all letters and graphics displayed on a single sign face. Channel letter signs are individually-fabricated three-dimensional letterforms, each constructed and illuminated separately. Channel letters offer a more premium appearance but cost significantly more. Box signs are more cost-effective but appear more dated and less branded.
How much do lighted box signs cost?
Lighted box sign costs depend on size, configuration (single-face vs double-face vs pylon-top), face graphic complexity, illumination type (standard vs custom), and mounting requirements. Small single-face wall cabinets cost significantly less than large double-face projecting cabinets. Call (702) 738-2218 or submit the quote form for written pricing.
How long do lighted box signs last?
Properly manufactured lighted box signs last 10 to 15+ years with periodic maintenance. The aluminum cabinet structure lasts indefinitely. Sign faces may need replacement every 8 to 12 years due to UV fading. LED illumination components carry multi-year warranty and 50,000+ hour ratings. Power supplies typically last 5 to 7 years and are field-replaceable.
Can fluorescent box signs be retrofitted to LED?
Yes. Fluorescent-illuminated box signs (the older standard before approximately 2010) can be retrofitted to LED illumination, typically yielding 60 to 70 percent energy savings and 5x longer lamp life. American LED Signage provides LED retrofit conversions during scheduled maintenance or as standalone projects. See our sign repair and maintenance page for details.
Do lighted box signs require permits?
Yes. Lighted box signs require sign permits from the municipality, plus electrical permits for the internal illumination. Some jurisdictions have specific size, area, and brightness restrictions for lighted box signs. American LED Signage handles the entire permit application process during the quote.
Can lighted box signs be installed on a pylon?
Yes. Pylon-top cabinet signs are a standard configuration combining a pylon sign pole structure with a lighted box sign cabinet mounted at the top. This is the standard format for gas stations, hotels, fast-food restaurants, and any business needing tall-pole identification combined with cabinet-style branding.
What sizes do lighted box signs come in?
Lighted box signs are custom-fabricated to any reasonable size, with common configurations ranging from 2 feet by 4 feet (small storefront) to 8 feet by 20 feet (pylon-top highway visibility). Size depends on local sign code area limits, building facade dimensions, viewing distance, and budget. American LED Signage helps select appropriate sizing during the quote process.
Can lighted box signs include changeable copy?
Standard lighted box signs display static branding only — the sign face is permanent. For changeable messaging, combinations of lighted box signs with marquee changeable letter sections or LED message centers are common. These combination configurations integrate permanent branding with changeable daily content.
Are double-face box signs more expensive than single-face?
Yes. Double-face projecting box signs cost more than single-face wall-mount cabinets because the cabinet construction is more complex (both sides need finished faces and illumination), the mounting hardware is more substantial (cantilever loads), and the installation is more time-intensive (electrical, structural, and visibility coordination on both sides). The price premium is typically 60 to 80 percent over comparable single-face cabinets.
